Sky, I am not sure I know how to change it but I am seeing on my main computer "Server Type: IMAP Mail Server, Server Name: and User Name: jmillsp. I don't know if smart phones automatically use IMAP but if using POP3, then that could also be a source of the problem.

Make sure that ALL computers you use are using IMAP and your disappearing emails problem will probably be solved. Windows 10 comes with an email client built in, but a third-party client like Thunderbird is a far better choice for managing your messages. If this is the case, then it won't matter which email program you use. It really sounds like you're using POP3 on one or both computers. Strangely, it came to my main computer inbox but within a minute or so-it disappeared from my main computer! I also tried forwarding one from my laptop to my main computer and it showed up in the inbox but soon simply disappeared!! In doing some looking around, decided I would go to the email program that is within the server and nothing there either!! Just for a trial, I sent myself a message from my laptop and then went to my main computer to check and see if it went to it. It will depend on which computer opened the email first. If both your main computer and laptop are using POP3, then your emails will be split between them and some will only be viewable on your main computer and others only viewable on your laptop. So from that point on, you can continue to view that email on the laptop but not on your main computer. So when you opened the email on the laptop, it was downloaded to your laptop and removed from the server.
Then, last night I decided I would look at my laptop again and my laptop is showing the ones I thought I had lost on my main computer. I got home and discovered the only emails I had in my inbox were new ones and none of the ones that I wanted simply left in my inbox for referencing to. What I have noticed is that we were gone a few days and I took my laptop with me and viewed my emails and deleted some I didn't want but didn't delete any that I wanted to remain available on my laptop or my main home computer. Disappearing emails can be caused by one computer using POP3 and therefore when THAT computer opens an email, it is downloaded to THAT computer and is no longer stored on the server so is not viewable by any other computer. Note that ALL computers accessing your emails MUST BE using IMAP for the emails to remain on the server. With POP3, when you open an email to read it, the email is automatically downloaded to THAT computer and is no longer viewable by any other computer. So the same email will still be viewable on any other computer. When you open an email to read it on one computer, it does not remove the email on the server.
With IMAP, all emails are stored on the server. You should be using IMAP to see emails on your main computer and laptop. OK, the IMAP and POP3 thing are very confusing to me and not sure which one I should be using in order to see my emails on my main computer and my laptop.
